Last weekend we checked out a few suspect anchors in Aberllyn:
The anchors are not PPE anchors, but do have PPE plate hangers attached to them so it would be easy to assume they are sound. One of the clues to the suspect anchor (well in addition to being able to pull them out by hand!!) is the dull colour of the bolt (not nut) of the anchor as well as the corrosion on the bolt. The anchors in question are those that hold the “Level 1” fixed rope traverse within the Cathedral stope.
If anyones interested in heading down at some point in the not so distant future, we could look to replace the suspect anchors with some resin ones (although we have had resin anchors fail in Aberllyn in the past as well!)
